City Hall Demonstration

Pat must have been 3 years old when I accepted a Headstart teaching job on the condition that he could come to Headstart with me (but be in another teacher's classroom).

Somehow the funds to open a number of new Headstart programs in Brooklyn were being held up by politics at City Hall in Manhattan. So Brooklyn Headstart people organized a picket line to march around and around in front of City Hall to demand the release of Headstart funds. We were hoping to be heard by Mayor John Lindsay. Mothers and children were asked to participate. Pat and I qualified for that!

We met the others and walked around and around in the park in front of City Hall. I can't remember the chants now. Certainly it was about money and kids and justice. After awhile Pat got tired of marching and said "Mama, pick me up". So, I did and we marched as one singing and chanting. All of a sudden an old man got up from a bench nearby and ran over pointing his finger at me. "Bet your mother is proud of you!" and walked away as fast as he'd come. I was so startled that I laughed. Pat laughed too, though he didn't know why and so did the women in front and behind me.

It wasn't funny, of course, but sometimes ya just gotta laugh.
